Description: Tool was made from a large, curved antler tine. A single beaver incisor pierces the item where it curves. The sharp edge of the tooth might have been used for engraving. The distal tip of the antler has three incised lines around the extreme end. The antler is pitted from weathering. It has been broken in several pieces and repaired. There are several chips missing from the beaver tooth. Item was excavated from Hilltop Mound in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Broad and thin ground stone ax has a wide, deep groove near the poll end that extends all the way around, which functioned to attach the axe head to a handle. Groove is bordered by ridges. Poll end is flattened with rounded corners. Blade is short and tapers slightly to wide cutting edge. The igneous rock is black and pale yellow in color. Description: Effigy is a relief carving of a human face on a half-round, oval piece of stone. The nose is prominent. Eyes are deep-set and round under high, arching eyebrows. The prominent lips are stylized. Ears are small and stylized. There is a large vertical groove on the back side. The effigy is made of brown sandstone. Description: Pipestone effigy pipe has a tall bowl with sides that curve outward and a wide, flat, flaring rim. Near the rim opposite the mouthpiece there is stylized effigy of what may be a bird looking forward. The bowl is set slightly forward on a flat, roughly rectangular platform. One corner of the platform is chipped. There is a ridge directly above and parallel to the hole for the pipe stem. The color is mainly dark red that is mottled with reddish yellow, pink and very dark gray. There are yellowish-brown deposits on the bowl. Description: Large, smooth, rounded stone artifact is roughly triangular in shape. On one side there are incised lines in a crosshatch pattern. On the other side there are incised lines that depict a serpent-like creature with large teeth, a fish-like tail and exaggerated spines decorated with crosshatching. A zigzag line is drawn from the eye to the heart. The artifact is made from black Ohio shale. It has been broken into three pieces and glued together.
